AIM
STANDARDIZATION WITHIN NATO course is offered to the staff with certain initial experience in standardization or no experience but strong interest in gaining knowledge on NATO standardization. The course aims at presenting organization and principles of NATO standardization, types of standardization documents and their development process. During the course the relationship between standardization and NATO defence planning is broadly discussed. Visiting lecturers from NATO Member and Partner countries present how the standardization is organized in their defence establishments.

TARGET AUDIENCE
(1) The target audience for this course are:
- military and civilian personnel of national defence organizations with certain initial experience in standardization;
- personnel from international and other organizations with interest in NATO standardization;
- personnel taking positions where NATO standardization orientation is needed or useful;
- recommended for personnel involved in NATO standardization process;
(2) Language Proficiency:
- English 3333 IAW STANAG 6001 - preferred,
- English 2222 IAW STANAG 6001 - acceptable.
TRAINING STRATEGY
Small Group Training Activities (i.e. syndicate work, case studies, etc.) culminating in practical Task Assessments (syndicate work presentations) to formally assess candidates performance.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
PO 1: Promote interoperability and standardization within NATO.
PO 2: Provide guidance on the NATO standardization process to support standards development / maintenance.
PO 3: Consider NATO Defence Planning Process, NATO-agreed terminology, and defence standardization organization in different countries when devising standards.

Dieter Schmaglowski

Colonel (ret.) Dieter Schmaglowski is an expert in strategic planning, military and NATO standardization, NATO structures, planning and processes. He is Ex-Deputy Director and Head Policy and Coordination Branch NATO Standardization Office (NSO). During his military career Dieter Schmaglowski has served in several NATO assignments: Staff Officer in the Operations and Plans Branch, NATO HQ CENTAG, Heidelberg, Germany; Branch Head, Planning Coordination and Support, Operational Preparation Directorate (OPD), Oeiras, Portugal; Acting Director OPD, Oeiras, Portugal; Head Joint Branch, NATO Standardization Agency (as of 01 July 2014 renamed to NATO Standardization Office), NATO HQ, Brussels.
Nikolaos Myriounis

Captain Hellenic Navy (ret.) Nikolaos Myriounis since 2004 and up to his retirement in 2022 served as the Standardisation Manager of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff/Defence Planning and Programming Directorate. On this basis, he was appointed as the Hellenic Representative to the NATO Standardization Management Group (SMG) and the Senior NATO Committee for Standardization (CS). He served for 12 years in the Hellenic Fleet as Head Weapons and Fire Control Supervisor. During this period, he participated in NATO Operations “Desert Storm”, “Active Endeavour” and “Enduring Freedom” where he was awarded medals by NATO, the UN, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. He also served as an Intelligence Officer at the Western European Union Military Staff HQs in Brussels from 1997 to 1999.

Speakers from NSO
The NATO Standardization Office (NSO) initiates, coordinates, supports and administers NATO standardization activities, which are conducted under the authority of the Committee for Standardization (CS) - the committee responsible for standardization policy. The NSO assists NATO’s Military Committee in developing military operational standards. These activities foster NATO standardization with the goal of enhancing the interoperability and operational effectiveness of Alliance military forces.

Speakers from WCNJiK
The Military Centre for Standardization, Quality and Codification (WCNJiK) is an organizational unit within The Ministry of National Defence of Poland, responsible for carrying out among others the following tasks: organizing and coordinating standardization activities in the Ministry of National Defence in the operational, materiel, technical, administrative and military terminology area, handling of NATO standardization documents within the Ministry of National Defence by coordinating the process of preparing national replies to NATO on ratification and implementation of NATO standardization agreements (STANAGs), organizing and coordinating the operation of the National Codification System (SKWO) and execution of tasks within the NATO Codification System.
